Tourism in this part of Lincolnshire is in its infancy which is surprising when you realise how attractive the Lincolnshire Wolds Area of Outstanding natural beauty happens to be. The empty landscape with hidden valleys tucked away in the folds of the wolds makes this a place of peace and quiet that is well worth a visit. There's plenty for the naturalist, walker, horse rider and cyclist to enjoy. Nettleton is a good place to use as a base for exploration and there is an excellent Pub for refreshment in the village. The nearby small town of Caistor provides basic services and Market Rasen with a good range of shops is just over 8 miles away
At present Nettleton has a small number of holiday cottages for visitors with more planned for the future.
National Wolds!
The Lincolnshire Wolds Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty is the focus of the penultimate programme in the current series of Radio 4’s Ramblings.
Clare Balding, the BBC presenter spent the day walking in the hills of the Lincolnshire Wolds with Louise Niekirk, Project Officer from the Lincolnshire Wolds Countryside Service and local residents Mike Garrs and Pete Skipworth. Mike had contacted Radio 4 suggesting they should come to the Lincolnshire Wolds. He said, “I am delighted they came out and are genuinely interested in a part of the country not previously known to them.”Louise said; “We were delighted to show Clare just how hilly parts of the Wolds are. We walked along the western edge of the Wolds from Tealby to Normanby le Wold, then continued to Nettleton. We had a lovely walk – very blustery which I’m sure the microphone picked up!” Some of the highlights of the walk included the Ramblers’ Church at Walesby, the highest point in eastern England near Normanby le Wold, which at over 500 feet is officially classed as a Marilyn (the better known Munroes are over 1,000 feet), as well as the old ironstone mines along the Nettleton valley. The Lincolnshire Wolds Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB) is a nationally important and protected landscape. 216 square miles (558 Sq km) was designated an AONB in 1973. The AONB contains the highest land in Eastern England between Kent and Yorkshire, rising to more than 160 m.
The Lincolnshire Wolds Countryside Service is a partnership organisation funded by Defra, Lincolnshire County Council, East Lindsey District Council, West Lindsey District Council and North East Lincolnshire Council.
